MSC Alexa is arriving in Bremerhaven on July 02nd, 2013.
Built: 1996 | IMO No.: 9129873 | Gross tonnage: 10,585 | Flag: Panama | Container capacity: 3,301 TEU
She serves in MSC’s Silk Service which connects the Far East with Europe but which so far hasn’t served Bremerhaven.
Shortly before arriving in Bremerhaven Kotug’s RT Innovation steams towards MSC Daniela…
…followed by Kotug’s latest tug boat, the RT Rob.
This huge vessel is the first 10,000+ TEU vessel calling MSCGate, Bremerhaven.
MSC Daniela arrives in Bremerhaven with a draft of 14.15 metres.
RT Innovation is supposed to be MSC Daniela’s stern tug…
… and as you can imagine RT Rob is her bow tug.
In front of Bremerhaven’s Stromkaje, there is a special turning area for vessels of this size.
Vessel’s of MSC Daniela’s size have to be turned around in Bremerhaven upon arrival and are therefore berthed with their starbord side.
With this call Bremerhaven is the third North European port after Felixstowe and Rotterdam which has been called by all three biggest types of containervessels: the Maersk E-type, the CMA CGM Christophe Colomb and last but not least the MSC D-type.
RT Rob and RT Innovation have to use all of their power in order to turn the vessel around …
RT Rob is Kotug’s latest and strongest tug boat operating at Bremerhaven.
MSC Daniela is looking splendid in the evening sun off Bremerhaven’s containerterminal.
The impressive wheelhouse.
Almost there….
What an impressive size…
On April 07th, 2010 Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) sent the MSC Daniela to Bremerhaven for the very first time.

MSC Daniela was the very first super-postpanmax-containervessel with a seperated wheelhouse and funnel.
MSC Daniela just passed Ossenisse.
The narrowest point of the river Scheldt is Walsoorden.
As you can see the vessels pass Walsoorden less than 100 metres from shore.
MSC Daniela is very impressive…
…but it still takes time to get used to this unusual design.
Compared to other vessels of her size the wheelhouse is very small.
Her funnel is very huge though.
In order to come to Antwerp MSC Daniela was lightend in Rotterdam. Therefore she arrived with only 11.1 metres draft.
Nice comparison: MSC Daniela (13,798 TEU) is passing the “small” Xin Shanghai (9,580 TEU).
What an impressive size…
MSC Daniela – MSC’s biggest type of containervessels. She and her sisters are the second biggest containervessels in the world. Maersk’s E-type is still a little bit bigger.
All pictures were taken at the river Scheldt on May 27th, 2009 during her very first call to Antwerp.
